Vodafone Sure Signal - sounded promising for all of 5 seconds

If you live in New Zealand and you’re a Vodafone customer then the chances are you’ve got awful cellular coverage. Where I live it’s so bad that I’ve considered disconnecting my mobile – when I’m at home the missed calls and call drop outs end up being more of a liability than anything else.

So the Sure Signal device should be something I’m excited about – and I was, until I read the bit that says you need to be a Vodafone broadband customer in order to use it. Huh? I need to use your crappy broadband service in order to apply a band aid for your crappy mobile reception? It seems a little backwards and frustrating to me.

Am I missing some technical aspect of these devices in terms of how they relate to the broadband connection, or is this just a rather terrible attempt for VFNZ to grab a few more broadband customers?

Hi Ross
there's technically no reason why you have to be a Vodafone Broadband customer - Vodafone impose this restriction because they can - or think they can. In the UK, Vodafone went the other way and support Sure Signal with any broadband supplier - as long as you have a 1+ Gbps connection.
A couple of caveats;
1) With a Vodafone broadband connection, sure signal is zero rated for traffic (other ISP's probably wouldn't do this - but for most people this is no big matter)
2) You may need to tweak some port settings on your ADSL router to get sure signal to work - again, for most people a small matter at worst compared to no mibile coverage at home.
Here's a link to Vodafone UK saying how they made sure that they provided people a choice of ISP -
www.thinkfemtocell.com/.../...ing-sure-signal.html. Also, www.Vodafone.co.uk also stipulates that sure call works with any suitable broadband connection.
This is just another one of those never ending, been here before, typical New Zealand Telco arrogant bully-boy tactical attempts to treat the NZ public like mushrooms. Bad enough that you would only buy this device because Vodafone's under-investment in mobile infrastructure has left you with bad or no mobile coverage. You also have to buy this unit, and now they also try to force you to become a Vodafone broadband customer.
For my part, I've lodged a formal complaint with the NZ Commerce Commision on that grounds that this is anti-competetive and should be or is illegal.

Cheers

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for confirming that - would love to know how things go with the Commerce Commission!
