I’ve been using the Office Live add-in for quite some time now. It’s proved incredibly useful to me and I wouldn’t be without it, but all along I’ve had a minor niggle with its recently used documents list – when accessing documents hosted in an Office Live Workspace, it’s always felt a bit random as to whether a document appears in the MRU list or not.
I think I’ve finally figured out how to make documents appear in the list. As silly as this sounds, it makes a large difference to the usability of the thing, especially if you’re regularly using a small subset of documents daily and yet they refuse to appear in the recent list.
Anyway, if you’re having the same problem, here’s how you can make an Office Live document appear in your MRU list (note that once it appears there it should stay there):
- Load Excel, open the document (yeah, really!)
- Make an edit – simply reading the document won’t do
- Don’t save!
- Double click the Office button (top left) to close down Excel. You’ll be prompted to save, so say yes.
- Re-open Excel, and the document should appear.
This all might sound a bit weird, and it feels it to me, but it works. Any other way of closing down Excel or closing the document and items simply don’t seem to appear in that list.
Your mileage may vary here, but this is what’s worked for me.

Adding Tooltips to Gridview Headers
As the title says, this is a very simple but dynamic way of achieving tooltip text on a header column. It's not overly flash, but it's lightweight and quick to implement.
