I’ve recently had cause to stop and think about Silverlight again. The recent preview and then release of Mindscape’s Silverlight Elements control suite followed by the need to put some video on the web for a customer got me feeling like it was time to start paying attention again. I did a bit of work with Silverlight many years ago during it’s early 1.x days, but have largely been ignoring it for the past year or so. Why? I don’t really know. Initially I think it was just that it didn’t explode like some Microsoft developers (including...
Mindscape has just released a preview of their Silverlight elements suite. They all look very slick, but for me the coverflow and the scheduler could be particularly useful. Maybe it’s time for me to start paying attention to Silverlight again! We’re pleased to announce a technical preview release of our Silverlight Elements suite, a pack of controls for Microsoft’s Silverlight Rich Internet Application platform. Silverlight is becoming an increasingly popular solution for building business applications as well as graphically rich media-oriented applications, and Silverlight Elements builds on that. Check them out here: Mindscape Silverlight Elements...
I was so busy last week that I managed to miss that the final version of Silverlight 2 was released. It's probably a suitable time to think out loud a little bit about Silverlight and it's future. I've been tinkering with Silverlight on and off since the initial 1.0 release and have a few projects I've been working on using various versions of the v2 betas. As a web developer I'm finding it great to work with, but for a long time I've had concerns about it's adoption by both developers and users (most importantly, corporate users who tend...
As the title says, the just announced RC version of Silverlight brings the final release of Silverlight 2.0 one step closer. The RC release looks packed full of fixes, and unfortunately also contains a few breaking changes.
It's one of the hazards of writing code against a beta product, and something I knew would need fixing one day – and it looks like that day might have to be tomorrow!

A useful tip for anyone playing about with hosted Silverlight 2 applications - if for some reason you don't want to use Microsoft's free Silverlight Hosting Service, and your hosting provider has yet to register the .XAP file type in IIS, then you can simply rename your .XAP files to .ZIP. Update all your references to the .XAP file (in any .ASPX or .HTML files you're using) and you should be all good. Handy! Tags: Silverlight
From Scott Guthrie's blog: Previously we've been referring to this .NET-enabled Silverlight release as "Silverlight V1.1". After stepping back and looking at all the new features in it (the above list is only a subset - there are many more we aren't sharing yet), we've realized that calling it a point release doesn't really reflect the true nature of it. Consequently we have decided to change the name and refer to it as "Silverlight V2.0" going forward. The fact that there are as yet unannounced features in the pipeline makes Silverlight development even more...
I've had a load of tabs open in my browser for the last week, all of which are useful and interesting, but none of which justify a full post. Here they are: Scott Guthrie talking about the asp:Listiew Control which is coming in ASP.NET 3.5 - I've been working with GridViews and Repeaters over the past couple of weeks, and doing so is making me really look forward to the ListView! As welcome as the control will be, you have to think that it's been a loooong time in coming (thanks for the link Doug, even if I did forget...

Today Microsoft announced the release of Silverlight 1.0, the fully supported version of its cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media and rich experiences on the Web.
As the above says, Silverlight 1.0 has now been released! This is a pretty important step, because it brings us one step closer to the final release of Silverlight 1.1, which is when the fun really begins.
In all seriousness, it's great that 1.0 has it's final release out, and that it seems to have happened in a pretty quick timeframe. I'm currently involved with a Silverlight project...

Troubleshooting WebResource.axd
The .NET 2.0 framework changed the way clientside JavaScript is
delivered to the browser. Previously, ASP.NET 1.1 used the
aspnet_client directory whereas now 2.0 uses WebResource.axd.

Microsoft AJAX Extensions: Sys.Debug is null or not an object
One of the breaking changes which was made with
the 1.0 release of the Microsoft Ajax Extensions was the renaming
of the 'Debug' class to 'Sys.Debug' for reasons of compatiability
with other frameworks. Breaking changes like this can often be a source of frustration..

Simple ASP.NET Character Counter
A textbox character counter is a pretty simple piece of functionality, and there's a lot of different ways to apply one to your application. The following method is nice and simple, and can be done using only clientside JavaScript if required, or combined with server side code in order to create a more dynamic effect

Adding Tooltips to Gridview Headers
As the title says, this is a very simple but dynamic way of achieving tooltip text on a header column. It's not overly flash, but it's lightweight and quick to implement.
