I’ve had a couple of positive buying/services experiences recently, and wanted to write about them briefly. I recently replaced my main computer. I wanted something which would work well for day to day development but also for the occasional gaming I manage to do. I spend a lot of time in my office as I work from home, so it’s important to have something powerful but quiet as well. Also as an added complication I’d recently purchased a SSD which I wanted to drop into the build. I did a bit of shopping around PC retailers in...
The latest in the Das Keyboard family has definitely broken a tradition – the keys have markings on them. And the markings are actual numbers and letters. And they’re in the right places. Personally, I’m not sure whether this is something which will ever catch on to true Das Keyboard fans, however the futuristic font, weird shape, loud clicking noises, and blue num/scroll/caps lock lights are all nice touches. Anyone who reads my sites knows that I'm a sucker for dropping too much cash on computer kit. However, only people who know me well are aware that I have incredibly bad luck with hardware. Stuff just goes wrong more often than it should.
So when I was planning the latest upgrade, my good friend Spksh offered to take time out from documenting New Zealand's descent into 4GW mayhem and to build the system for me. He's one of those people who loves playing with hardware, and he's damn good at it.
With him building the rig, my hardware curse was bound to be...
One of the most commonly used applications on any mobile phone is the calculator. From the dawn of mobile phones, people have been using the calculator on their phone to split bills, tabs, or to do sums under the table so they can appear slick at mathematics. However, despite their popularity, pretty much all of the actual Calculator applications themselves have been pretty awkward and cumbersome to use.
Calcium S60 (from mtvoid, the makers of Control Freak) changes all that.
It's so simple and easy to use that it leaves you wondering why someone didn't do something like...
I'm still undecided about the Das Keyboard 2. Visually, it's much nicer than the original. It's a lot less retro, and they got rid of the display text over the LED buttons. It always seemed stupid that someone who had a blank keyboard would need to know which LED was for numlock etc. However, it's a hell of a lot louder (much to the concern of my workmates) and the weighting of the keys doesn't seem to be as noticeable. It feels like it's a lot smoother to type on though, which is a good thing. Either...

Troubleshooting WebResource.axd
The .NET 2.0 framework changed the way clientside JavaScript is
delivered to the browser. Previously, ASP.NET 1.1 used the
aspnet_client directory whereas now 2.0 uses WebResource.axd.

Microsoft AJAX Extensions: Sys.Debug is null or not an object
One of the breaking changes which was made with
the 1.0 release of the Microsoft Ajax Extensions was the renaming
of the 'Debug' class to 'Sys.Debug' for reasons of compatiability
with other frameworks. Breaking changes like this can often be a source of frustration..

Simple ASP.NET Character Counter
A textbox character counter is a pretty simple piece of functionality, and there's a lot of different ways to apply one to your application. The following method is nice and simple, and can be done using only clientside JavaScript if required, or combined with server side code in order to create a more dynamic effect

Adding Tooltips to Gridview Headers
As the title says, this is a very simple but dynamic way of achieving tooltip text on a header column. It's not overly flash, but it's lightweight and quick to implement.
